Known for It’s Culture, History and Diversity- Decatur- A Great Place to Live

Decatur has a history now of nearly 200 years since it was founded in 1823 and named for a naval hero, Stephen Decatur.  In the 1830′s the people of Decatur made a decision that changed the face of the south. The birth of Atlanta, a new city to the west of Decatur was formed because the people of Decatur did not want the railroad to stop in their city. It would bring too much growth and noise. They wanted to keep their city quiet and peaceful.

Today, Decatur is a trendy, small mixed use community with easy transit to downtown Atlanta. As in many urban areas, Decatur saw a downturn in the 1960′s and 1970′s with property values declining and people moving out. Due to the foresight of downtown develop plans, the city is regaining its strength and has become a local and national example of a progressive small city of diversity.
