Number 2-Depersonalize
Let the buyer see themselves in the home rather than seeing pictures of you and your family everywhere. When they see pictures it makes them feel they are “intruding” on your home and are more anxious to get out of the house, than to stay and look around.
You want the buyer to be able to think about where they are going to put their sofa. They should be thinking of whether their clothes will fit in the closet. In other words, they need to think if the house could suit their needs.
Here are some things that need to be removed to depersonalize the homes:
- Photos
- Trophies
- Degrees
- Medicines
- Books-unless it is the classics-remove anything that displays your taste in a subject
- Religious Icons
- Clothing and shoes-less is more
- Jewelry-for security reasons
Take one area of the home at a time and really look at it. Try to see what the buyer will see and then make it tasteful but generic. You want anyone to feel at home there and hopefully make a good offer on the house.
